TEILZ is coming out with her debut studio album come to mommy which is set to be released on October 9th. TEILZ has made a big impact before the release of her anticipated album, playing Coachella and her many years performing sets and working behind the scenes in LA. Her first single release for this album is pretty please, this track is also what starts out the album. The song’s runtime is 3:46 and is considered Pop by Apple Music.
pretty please opens with a repetitive drum accompanied with a Rocksteady-indebted groove that settles us into her album. This drum carries us throughout the song giving us a good base to dance to. Speaking of dancing this is exactly where this song takes me. While maybe a little on the nose, it feels like being out with your friends, having fun and the club is just crowded enough. Singing back and forth to each other, smiling and having a wonderful time. A catchy beat to get you dancing is paired with lyrics of desire, “look into my eyes / like you’re looking at me / give you what I want / and I don’t say please” there is control in this situation mixed with a little playfulness, prioritizing yourself. Combined with the desire for reassurance to be told that she is the one, a fancy car without the rust. Keeping the playfulness at the end by saying she’s their angel “eat my dust.” The ending of this song is interesting to me as well, “you make no sense at all / you make no sense at all” this closing leaves in intrigued and wanting to listen to more. How we flow from this confidence of giving what I want. To the plea of wanting to be who this person wants her to be, for this relationship to last. To not understanding the dynamic or motives. come to mommy is described as journey through ego death and crisis coming into rebirth, resilience and joy. pretty please gives us a good insight into what is to come and how the lowest lows can still lead you to the highest highs.
pretty please is also accompanied by a music video! This music video is fun and playful, combining the visuals of old infomercials with lyrics being the projects (and prices getting higher as the song goes on), to black and white, to colorful and layered. The mixing of these aesthetics adds a looseness to this single. Not taking yourself too seriously and having fun with different visuals and in front of the camera. In her announcement post on Instagram for this album she references Persephone and turning darkness into light and bringing out songs from her past and how they are important now. I am definitely interested in how this album continues to move visually.
pretty please is an exciting introduction to the work. I’ll be honest to say that TEILZ makes music that I don’t typically listen to but nontheless has me very interested. I am super excited for the release of this album and opening my mind and ears to new exciting music! come to mommy is out October 9th, make sure to be on the look out!
